How do school applications work in Tunbridge Wells?

Tunbridge Wells sits in the Kent County Council (KCC) admissions area, so you do not apply to schools in the borough one by one. You apply through KCC, which runs a co-ordinated scheme: parents name their preferred schools on a single application, the schools rank applicants against their own published oversubscription rules, and KCC then sends out one offer. GOV.UK says the same in general terms, telling parents to contact their local council to apply for state school places, including places in other council areas. This guide is an independent directory's summary, not a council publication, and the dates below are the ones we could read at the time of writing (September 2026). Please check them on KCC's own pages before you rely on them.

When is the deadline for secondary school applications?

For children starting Year 7 in September 2027, which normally means children born between 1 September 2015 and 31 August 2016, KCC's co-ordinated scheme sets out the following timetable. Applications open on Tuesday 1 September 2026 and the closing date for application forms is Monday 2 November 2026, with all deadlines running to 23:59:59 on the day. One thing to be aware of: the admissions page of Tunbridge Wells Grammar School for Boys quotes 31 October 2026 for the application deadline, so the safest course is to treat the earlier date as your target and submit well before it. You can change your preferences up to Monday 7 December 2026 without being treated as late, and KCC will send offers by email after 4pm on National Offer Day, Monday 1 March 2027, with letters by first class post for families who did not give an email address. Places must be accepted or declined by Monday 15 March 2027, and the deadline for lodging an appeal is Tuesday 13 April 2027.

It is worth knowing that the document we read is titled as a proposed scheme, published on KCC's committee site, so confirm the final dates with KCC admissions before you plan around them.

What is the Kent Test and how do I register?

Kent still has selective grammar schools, and entry to them depends on being assessed as suitable through the Kent Test. The scheme names Tunbridge Wells Girls' Grammar School and Tunbridge Wells Grammar School for Boys among the Kent schools that require the Kent grammar school assessment. For the 2027 entry round, registration opened on Monday 1 June 2026 and closed on Wednesday 1 July 2026, and it was done online with a Kent Test Application Form. The test takes place on Thursday 10 September 2026 for pupils attending a Kent school, and from the weekend of 12 and 13 September 2026 for pupils who do not. KCC then sends assessment decisions after 4pm on Thursday 15 October 2026 to parents who gave an email address, and by first class post to everyone else.

If you did not register, the picture is stricter than many parents expect. The scheme says late registrations from children at Kent primary and junior schools could be accepted if a form reached KCC by Tuesday 21 July 2026, but late applications for children at non-Kent schools could not be accepted. Outside a small number of exceptions, such as illness on the test dates or a move into Kent, a child who has not been tested will not get another chance until after Tuesday 27 April 2027. The scheme also says that naming a Kent grammar school on your application without having taken the assessment makes that preference invalid. There is no right of appeal against the assessment decision itself, although you can appeal an admissions refusal after offer day.

Being assessed as suitable does not guarantee a place. Tunbridge Wells Grammar School for Boys says on its admissions page that it can only consider applicants assessed as suitable through KCC's process, that the Kent Test score itself does not decide who gets in, and that its published admission number is 300, made up of 210 places at the Tunbridge Wells campus and 90 at Sevenoaks. It adds that parents cannot choose a campus on the application, and that students are allocated using a distance calculation provided by KCC.

Which secondary schools are in Tunbridge Wells?

We are not going to rank schools, and we have not quoted any inspection grades, because we could not confirm current ones from Ofsted or GOV.UK for this guide. What we can state from the schools' own pages is this. Tunbridge Wells Girls' Grammar School is on Southfield Road, Tunbridge Wells, TN4 9UJ, and describes itself as a girls' grammar school. Tunbridge Wells Grammar School for Boys is on St John's Road, Tunbridge Wells, TN4 9XB, and is a selective school that follows KCC's co-ordinated scheme. What about primary and reception applications?

KCC runs a separate primary round. The timeline published by Temple Hill Primary Academy, a Kent school, for Reception entry in September 2027 says applications open on Friday 6 November 2026 and close on Friday 15 January 2027, with offers sent by email after 4pm on Friday 16 April 2027 and a deadline of Friday 30 April 2027 to accept. The same page lists appeals for Reception to be submitted by Monday 17 May 2027. Because that is a school's summary rather than KCC's own page, please check the dates on KCC's primary school places pages before you rely on them.

How does school transport work?

Free transport is decided by your council, which for Tunbridge Wells means KCC. GOV.UK sets out the national starting point: a child may qualify if they attend their nearest suitable school and it is more than 2 miles away for a child under 8, or more than 3 miles away for a child aged 8 or over. Eligibility can also apply where there is no safe walking route, or where special educational needs, disability or a mobility problem mean the child cannot walk. GOV.UK adds that from 2026 to 2027 some families on Universal Credit with household income of £7,400 or less a year may qualify for extra help, with different distance rules by age. The important catch is the phrase nearest suitable school, which is not always the school you prefer, so a grammar school or faith school further away will not automatically qualify. Apply through KCC, and do it early, because transport is assessed separately from your school place.
