Pembury

Pembury is a large village about 2.5 miles north-east of Tunbridge Wells, in the High Weald, and the home of Tunbridge Wells Hospital.

Pembury is a large village about 2.5 miles north-east of Royal Tunbridge Wells, within the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Settlement here probably predates the Norman Conquest, and the earliest documented reference dates to 1337. Pembury Parish Council was established in 1895. The village stayed largely rural until the early 20th century, when housing estates expanded it considerably.

The Old Church, of Norman origin, stands in woods north of the A228. St Peter's Upper Church was built in 1847 on higher ground in the village, and its spire was added in 1886. Kent College, an independent school, occupies a 75-acre site. Lower Green Recreation Ground hosts the parish office, a pavilion, a village hall and a playground, and the parish also has allotments.

Tunbridge Wells Hospital at Pembury opened in September 2011. The A21 and A228 bypasses were both built in the mid-1980s. Pembury has no railway station of its own. The nearest stations are at Tunbridge Wells, High Brooms, Tonbridge and Paddock Wood.
